Funding

Skills Trades Training works with government funding schemes and offers clear fee structures to make trades training accessible for everyone.

Government Support Available

The New Zealand government backs trades training because skilled tradies keep the country running. From the Fees Free scheme to Apprenticeship Boost funding, there are several ways to make your training more affordable.

Whether you're starting your apprenticeship or an employer looking to train your team, government support helps bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity. These schemes recognise that investing in trades skills is investing in New Zealand's future.

Fees Free Changes

Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Policy clarification and what it means for you

In 2025, there are fees-free policy changes that affect when and how your training fees are covered. Here's what this means for apprentices and trainees:

Signed on before 2025

You'll have your fees covered for 24 months unless your eligibility finishes prior to that as a result of you using up your full entitlement as per the original fees free policy.

Signing on in 2025

You come under 'final year fees free' if you're eligible to receive it. This covers the final 24 months of training fees in a work-based apprenticeship.

For complete details, visit the official TEC website or check our Fees Free Policy page.

Apprenticeship Boost

Financial support that makes business sense

The Apprenticeship Boost is available until June 2028 and encourages employers to hire and train apprentices by offering direct financial support.

You can get up to $500 a month, per apprentice, not including GST. If you're GST registered, you'll be paid the amount plus GST.

This funding recognises that training apprentices is an investment in New Zealand's skilled workforce. Employers interested in the Apprenticeship Boost can find detailed information on eligibility criteria, subsidy rates, and the application process on the Work and Income website.

Training Fees

Straightforward weekly fees with no surprises

Skills Trades Training keeps fee structures simple and transparent. Our competency-based apprenticeships mean you pay a weekly amount until you complete your qualification.

2025 fees for apprentices are $59.00 per week.

Payment is set up with a direct debit to Skills Group.

What's included: Your weekly fee covers all essential training components including off-job training blocks, online learning modules, practical assessments, and ongoing support from your Training Advisor.

Skills Trades Training apprentices get:

  • Industry expert tutors who know their trades inside-out
  • State-of-the-art training facilities nationwide
  • Modern learning technology combined with hands-on experience
  • Ongoing pastoral care and professional support
  • Training schedules that work with your job

One of the best parts about apprenticeships is earning while you're learning. You don't need large student loans or multiple jobs to get qualified in essential trades that keep New Zealand running.

We’re New Zealand's leading trades training provider for electrical, plumbing, gasfitting, drainlaying and roofing. Our industry experts prepare the next generation of tradies with skills that work where it matters – on the job site.
