What is RPL?

If you have prior study or work experience, you may be able to transfer credits towards your chosen qualification, helping fast-track your studies by skipping certain modules.

Pathway Options

Credit Transfer (CT) If you have completed the same unit standard from a qualification awarded by Skills Institute or another New Zealand institution, you may be eligible for a Credit Transfer. This option is only available for previous programmes studied in New Zealand. Click here to learn more about CT.

Cross Credit (CC) If you have completed a similar unit standard from a qualification awarded by Skills Institute or another New Zealand institution, you may be eligible for Cross Credit. This option is only available for previous programmes studied in New Zealand. Click here to learn more about CC.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) If you have relevant life or work experience, either alone or combined with previous study, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning, and therefore be awarded credits towards a new programme. This option is available for applicants with experience or qualifications from both New Zealand and overseas. Click here to learn more about Recognition of Prior Learning.

Recommendation for Registration (RFR) is a programme for the Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying industry. RFR is an assessment process for people who are not formally qualified in NZ and seek registration with the NZ Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). You either have overseas qualifications you want recognised here, or you are not formally qualified but have relevant skills and experience you want assessed. If successful, we issue you a Letter of Recommendation for Registration in the relevant Category, which you can use towards your registration pathway with the PGDB. Click here to learn more about the Recommendation for Registration.

Fees

Credit Transfer Fees: there is no cost for this service.

Cross Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning

  • Admin Fee: NZ$200 (including GST, nonrefundable) - must be paid before your application is reviewed
  • Credit Fee: NZ$20 per credit (including GST) awarded - payable after the evaluation is complete.

Example: if you are awarded 3 unit standards of 10 credits each, the total cost would be 30 x NZ$20 = NZ$600.

Note: the number of credits awarded depends on how many outcomes can be matched. We cannot guarantee partial or full success of your application.

Recommendation for Registration (RFR): Please check the website for more information regarding each category.

Application Process

Contact us: Email [email protected] and let us know which pathway you believe suits you and the name of the programme you are seeking credits for.

Initial Steps: Our team will contact you to assist with providing the necessary evidence and paying the admin fee. Please ensure you have access to your email for correspondence.

Assessment: An assessor will evaluate your application and provide feedback within 30 working days.

Additional Evidence: If more evidence is needed, you will be contacted via email. You must submit the additional evidence within 2 months of the request. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your application, and you will need to pay the administrative fee again to proceed with your application.

Outcome Notification: You will be contacted via email regarding the evaluation outcome. If successful, you will be informed about the credits awarded and the final payment amount. Payment must be made in full.

Enrolment: Once payment is made, apply to your desired programme through our website. Provide the outcome letter during enrolment. Our team will adjust your tuition fee if necessary and report the awarded credits to NZQA.

Student Loan / Allowances: Domestic learners can contact StudyLink.

Extension or Cancellation: To cancel or request more time to complete your application, please contact [email protected]. Decisions will be made at the discretion of Skills on a case-by-case basis.

Appeal Process

You may appeal if you have gathered more evidence after the final decision or do not agree with the final result.

Send an email to [email protected] within 7 working days of the decision notification. The Appeals Subcommittee will review the appeal. The General Manager, Academic Quality will communicate the outcome.
