About this qualification

This solar training was previously delivered through E-tec and is now offered through Skills Trades Training, with the same course and the same NZQA recognition.

This course teaches you to design battery storage systems for grid-connected PV systems, and install, maintain and fault-find battery storage systems that keep working.

Complete this along with the GCPV course and you'll have the knowledge and skills needed to become endorsed for Mains Parallel Generation Systems (you need two years registration first).

Course topics covered

Introduction to battery energy storage systems, battery characteristics, battery technologies, power conversion equipment, preliminary system design, selecting and sizing the inverter, selecting and sizing battery storage, selecting and sizing a controller, sizing the PV array, balance of system, system layout, system performance, economics and documentation, installation work health and safety, system installation, and operation and maintenance.

Who should take this course

This course is designed for registered electricians, electrical engineers, and electrical inspectors. The Grid-connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPV) Micro-credential is a pre-requisite to this course.

Outcome of the course

NZQA Level 4 Micro-credential 4556 (10 credits).

This course is endorsed by SEANZ (Sustainable Energy Association of New Zealand).

By completing the Grid-Connected Battery Storage Systems (GCBS) micro-credential, along with the Grid-connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPV)  micro-credential, you will gain the necessary knowledge, training, skills, and experience to become an Electrician, Electrical Engineer, or Electrical Inspector: Endorsed Mains Parallel Generation Systems. You must have held Registration for at least two years to receive the endorsement.

At the end of this learning package, learners will be able to:

  • Plan the design of battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems.
  • Design battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems.
  • Plan for the installation, maintenance or fault finding of battery storage systems for grid-connected PV systems.

Course structure

3-day course – 8am to 4.30pm

Self-paced online learning – 76 hours approx. (with Tutor support). It is recommended at least 50% of this is completed prior to attending the in-person block course.

Key Information

You must be a Registered Electrician, Registered Electrical Engineer or Registered Electrical Inspector to enrol in this course. The GCPV micro-credential is a pre-requisite to this course.

Duration: 76 hours of online learning, followed by a 3-day in-person course
